sally kidd, wbal-tv 11 news. >> here in maryland, voters will not only help choose the next president of the united states, but will be weighing in on seven statewide ballot questions. same sex marriage is one of those hot-button referendum issues. kai reed spent the day at one rally in support of the measure at the university of maryland college park. >> maryland will be the very first day in the nation to affirm everyone is equal rights. >> the rally drew a crowd of several dozen supporters. a handful of maryland legislators talked about the importance of getting registered to vote and the impact that young voters can make an election. young voters tipped in obama's favor in 2008. >> we registered over 2000 students of the past couple of weeks. polls show an overwhelming majority of students support

wbaltv.com. >> loved ones gathered this evening for a candlelight vigil to remember the lives of five family members who are killed in an early-morning fire in east baltimore. sheldon dutes joins us with more on the vigil and the latest on the investigation. >> firefighters say they are still trying to figure out where the fire started and what may have sparked the fire. relatives said there were smoke alarms in the home, but firefighters say based on the evidence that does not appear to be true at this time. dozens of loved ones gathered tonight to pray for the victims and families. stuffed animals and lighted candles decorate the entrance of the home where four children and their grandmother killed at an early-morning fire. a seven-euro was one of the victims. >> we both like to get on the

mother, and i have been in both places, is just heart wrenching. as a community, we have to support each other. >> that is what dozens of loved ones did as the parade and lean on each other for strength. -- as they prayed and leaned on each other for strength. >> two firefighters were hurt in that fire this morning. they were treated for non life- threatening injuries at the hospital and have been released. city officials are urging anyone who does not have smoke detectors in their home to call 311. >> three more city firefighters are recovering tonight after fire in self these baltimore. investigators said the fire broke out in the basement of a home of around 3:00 this morning. firefighter suffered burns to their hands and faces and are listed in stable condition. there is no word on exactly what sparked that fire. >> baltimore city police are

top officials climbs higher. tonight, tracking taxpayer money. the overtime cost racked up an executive protection of the city's top officials. >> despite yearly budget deficits, those costs continue to go up. jane bode miller has more on what she has uncovered. -- jayne miller has more on what she has uncovered. >> former mayor stephanie rawlings lake has quite the entourage as she travels around. she is protected wherever she goes by city police officers whose sole duty is to provide the mayor with executive protection. it all comes with the cost. for the last fiscal year, over time alone was $103,765. that was substantially higher than the overtime cost for fiscal year 2011, which came in at $69,823.

one big reason, the unit got bigger. it grew from six officers the previous year to seven officers now. they also travel with her out of town. that added another $7,700 in the last fiscal year. take that plus overtime cost plus minimal series of the officers, and it is enough to cover the starting salaries of 10 police officers. executive protection is provided to the police commissioner, even though the commissioner carries a gun. two officers assigned to protect outgoing commissioner fred bealefeld made thousands and overtime last year. $38,987 last year. today we saw them driving bernstein at lunch. >> by comparison, neither the baltimore county state's
